Jade-Jadeite

The stone Jade-Jadeite has derived its name from the Spanish word “piedra de ijada”. It is a generic term that have been used for two gems namely, nephrite and jadeite. These two gems are considered in China as “ zhen yu” meaning “genuine jade”. Since Jadeite is not abundantly found so it is regarded more valuable than nephrite. The precious Jade-Jadeite is mined in the countries like China, Russia and Guatemala. But the best quality of this gemstone comes from Burma.


The beautiful Jade-Jadeite gemstones are cut in the centres of Hongkong, Beizing, and Canton. In the process of making this gemstone diamond powder and carborundum is used. The gem jadeite shows different types of hues like green, white, pink, reds, blacks, browns and violets. Both nephrite and jadeite are opaque, close-grained but they totally differ in colors and composition.

Hemimorphite

Hemimorphite, one of the common sorosilicates gets its name from its polar or hemimorphic crystal characteristic features. Hemimorphite was originally named as calamine but this name was already in use for another mineral and hemimorphite was the common choice. But now-a-days it is the name that is widely used. The word ‘hemi’ itself means half while the ‘morph’ means shape and thus no other name could have been better than hemimorphite.

The unique structure of hemimorphite is such that the bottom portion is rather blunt being dominated by a pedion face while the opposite end that is the top is like the point of a pyramid. Though there are few other minerals which exhibit hemimorphic characteristics such as tourmaline, none can show them as well as hemimorphite.
